Letter to Col. A. S. Pendleton [manuscript], 1864 April 25.

An 8-page letter dated April 25, 1864, from Jubal Early to Lt. Col. A.S. Pendleton criticizing the Inspector General's service. Early defends himself in refusing to carry out orders that all tents and flies that can be spared be turned in at once. Early claims that a great deal of misunderstanding will be saved by sending orders through the proper channel and argues that a decision by General Lee, approved by the Secretary of War (concerning chiefs of staff carrying out general orders) is not applicable to the case which is being discussed in the letter. Also included is an October 8, 1938, letter to UVA Librarian Harry Clemons offering the Early letter for approval and sale and a typewritten note ("Jubal A. Early Letters") with sample auction records and prices for Early letters "from 1904 to date."
